One of our goals for the Gift of Open Source this year is to lower the barrier for contributing to open source projects for new contributors. The Pantheon Community team has partnered with AmyJune Hineline (@volkswagenchick) of Kanopi who offered to run some workshops during Gift of Open Source. AmyJune speaks at a LOT of community events in the WordPress and Drupal spaces with a main focus on making participation in open source accessible to everyone. AmyJune will be presenting throughout Gift of Open Source using training materials aimed to help those that are new to contribution, non-coders, or not quite comfortable jumping in alone.
The last two workshops in this series are scheduled Wednesday December 16 at 9:30 AM PST and Thursday December 17 at 8:30 AM PST. These workshops are CMS agnostic, meaning the information presented will be applicable to either Drupal or WordPress.
There will be a short demo and talk component with LOTS of time scheduled for Q&A. Bring your questions! If you cannot attend live, never fear! These will be recorded and we will have those recordings available for those that would like them. If you have questions you’d like answered during the live event, you can leave a reply to this forum post or send me a DM.
Coming up first on December 16 from 9:30-10:30 AM PST , AmyJune will be talking about How to Review an Issue. Check out her description below and join us on Wednesday at this link (no registration necessary).
Drupal and WordPress both offer many ways to contribute. The review process is an essential part of the development of open-source projects and anyone who has some basic familiarity with these projects can review patches. We will review the basics and demo the review process from how to select a novice issue to applying the patch.
The final workshop in our series will be on December 17 from 8:30-9:30 AM PST and will cover How to Create a Patch. The workshop description is posted below. Join us Thursday at 8:30 AM PST using this link (no registration necessary).
Giving back to code is fun and can be easy! At first glance, patching can seem daunting but in actuality, there are only a few steps in the process. In this session we’ll go over the basic workflow for creating a patch. We’ll look at the necessary tools and go through the process step by step… it’s easier than you think!
