How to upgrade from Drupal 7 to 9. Can I test upgrading process in multi-dev?

So I created a new instance of the site in the multi-dev and I am wondering if I can try upgrading there. It won’t affect my original site or the dev version I have, right?

Also is there one stop doc anywhere for doing so.

Thanks.

Hey @fuser!

Great question! Tagging a few people in here to see if someone can point you in the right direction. @joan.edwards @edwardangert @JohnRichardsII any chance you can help get them back on track here?

Hi, and welcome!

Test upgrading in a multi dev is just what you should do.

First, review the guide on Drupal.org that covers preparing your site for upgrade.
https://www.drupal.org/docs/upgrading-drupal/how-to-prepare-your-drupal-7-or-8-site-for-drupal-9

Next, you’ll need to upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8. Our guide on major version upgrades can help.

To upgrade Drupal to a new major version (e.g. version 7 to version 8) you must create a new site. Do not perform a major version upgrade from within the original site. If you have a Drupal 7 site that you want to upgrade to Drupal 8, create a new Drupal 8 site and add content, files and modules from the old site into the new site.

Once you’re on Drupal 8, moving to 9 is much easier.

Hope that’s helpful!
